Spain Non Lucrative Visa: Is School Enrollment Required for Children at the Houston Consulate?

Question

Will the Houston consulate ask for proof of school enrollment for a 13 year old, when applying for a Spain Non Lucrative Visa?

Answers

These are the answers from Spainguru’s Facebook group members:

“They did in May 2025: https://spainguru.es/2025/06/04/spain-non-lucrative-visa-family-application-at-houston-bls-may-2025/

Is homeschooling accepted? Or online school?” -“Not sure of that. This could be a question for the group in general.”

“They asked us for proof of enrollment in the U.S. when we had our appointment May, 2025.

We were able to provide report cards from the school portal via email, but I suggest you bring them.

Perhaps because school is mandatory in Spain, IDK, but we also had proof of enrollment in private school for the coming year in Spain. Others at Houston after us were not asked for the private school enrollment in Spain.”

“So you enrolled your child in private school before you were approved for the visa? What happens if you don’t get approved?”

“Yes, we did. We paid a deposit/registration (I think like $1,600).

We met the requirements, so we were pretty confident we would be approved. If anything, we would have had to wait a couple more months.

Anyway, you need to apply early to get in a private school. We would have lost our deposit. School was our number one priority.”

“My family and I applied in Houston in the end of June 2025.

I enrolled my children in an international school just in case because I was concerned they would ask for it. I paid the enrollment fee for my 3 kids and provided the paperwork.

I also provided paperwork for the school they were enrolled in for the 2024-2025 school year. They did not mention anything about the schooling when I applied but that could have been because they saw it all there.

All that being said we are still waiting for a response if we have been approved or denied. They have asked twice for additional paperwork (not school related) so hopefully we will hear something soon.”

“Interesting that they ask about school here, I don’t think I listed that when I was looking at the documents I need.”

“They didn’t ask I was just paranoid and wanted to be overly prepared.

So you may not have to worry about it, they seemed uninterested in the school when we were in the interview.”

Conclusion

From the experiences shared, the Houston consulate sometimes requests proof of school enrollment for children when applying for the Spain Non Lucrative Visa, but not always. Some families were asked for school documents, while others were not.

Families who prepared both U.S. school records and proof of enrollment in a Spanish private or international school felt more confident, even though this meant paying deposits before visa approval. While this carries some risk if the visa is denied, many parents considered it necessary since education in Spain is mandatory.

Overall, applicants should be ready to show both current U.S. school enrollment and potential Spanish school enrollment when applying for the Spain Non Lucrative Visa at the Houston consulate. This helps avoid delays and ensures compliance with requirements related to children’s education. This article is based on personal opinions from the Spainguru community and is not legal advice.
