Question
Question about Spain non lucrative visa renewal: For those who have renewed their Non-Lucrative Visa (NLV), could you please share which province you did your renewal in?
Also, were you required to show proof of funds in a Spanish bank account, or were you able to renew by showing funds held in a foreign bank account? Thanks in advance for your input!
Answers
These are the answers of Spainguru’s Facebook group members:
“Barcelona, was in Wise account.”
“USD and showed my Belgian EUR just for activity as it never holds much.”
Valencia and yes needed proof of funds in a Spanish bank (think it makes it easier). I was told you don’t have to but they insisted. My Wise account was no good as it had an IBAN number, not Spanish.
“A Coruña province in Galicia. Proof of funds from a US financial entity that I had translated.”
“We did our renewal in February and were approved in three and a half weeks in the Alicante region. Funds were in both Spanish and foreign banks.”
“We did years 2 and 3 renewal in Alicante using an English bank.”
“I showed my Spanish bank account but only as proof of living here and financial activity. My IPREM and pension were all in UK accounts. Renewal was in Málaga.”
“Tarragona province, US bank account that I translated myself.”
“Málaga. Renewed years 2 and 3 using US bank statements translated.”
“Madrid, all US accounts. Statements in Spanish thanks to a service offered by Chase bank.”
“Albacete, renewed in December 2024. Approved within a week. Proof of funds were in a foreign account although I added my Revolut account (Spanish IBAN) to show daily expenses.”
“UK bank statements (3 months) sworn translated for renewal in Málaga.”
“Did years 2 and 3 using Spanish and English bank accounts in Alicante.”
“In October 2024, renewed in Málaga. Money was in US banks. Submitted US bank statements translated. One renewal needed additional documentation: an affidavit attesting that the bank statement was a true and correct copy, notarized, apostilled, and re-translated.”
“Partner’s NLV renewal in January in the Alicante region. No funds in a Spanish account, only UK pension and savings. Approved 4 weeks later.”
“Murcia. Used UK premium bonds translated, UK pension translated, and showed six months of Spanish bank statements.”
“Alicante region renewal in October 2024. Pension statements translated, UK bank statements not translated. Approved in six weeks.”
“Just renewed in Sevilla. All money still in US accounts.”
“Murcia. Funds were in UK accounts, no Spanish bank account.”
“Asturias. Showed translated Social Security letter, translated rental income letter from the US, and Spanish bank statements.”
“Renewed twice in Málaga. Presented SS income verification letter translated—no bank records.”
“Granada. Submitted early October 2024, approved in five weeks. Provided an official letter from a Singapore bank manager translated into Spanish and attached 12 months of bank statements (not translated).”
Conclusion
According to Spainguru’s Facebook group members, renewing the Spain non lucrative visa does not necessarily require holding funds in a Spanish bank account.
Many applicants successfully renewed their visas by providing proof of funds from foreign banks, as long as the documentation was properly translated or accompanied by supporting affidavits when needed.
However, certain provinces like Valencia or Canary Islands seem to prefer or require proof of funds within a Spanish account, and having a Spanish IBAN can sometimes make the process smoother.
Overall, requirements may vary slightly depending on the province and even the reviewer handling the case, so it’s crucial to be well-prepared and to have translated financial documents ready.
